New Moon in Scorpio

A new cycle begins with a New Moon in Scorpio. This cycle presents a good time to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Scorpion.

This lunation stimulates a new beginning in the fixed water sign of Scorpio. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Scorpion–passionate, resourceful, focused, probing, deep, and perceptive–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. Scorpio New Moons are generally good for working on our self-mastery skills. We may want to pinpoint the things in our lives that make us feel out of control, such as addictions and debts, and work on freeing ourselves of these emotional burdens. This New Moon cycle is also an opportune one in which to explore what is missing in our lives that leads us to engage in these self-destructive behaviors. This cycle represents an opportunity to rid ourselves of the “junk” in our lives–material and spiritual. With this potent Scorpio energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives.

One of Scorpio’s “lessons” involve learning to dig deeper into the mysteries around us instead of always being content with status quo. Taking the time to understand others’ motives can enrich our feelings of intimacy, forgiveness, and sense of meaning. Scorpio also teaches us that dedication to one meaningful relationship or undertaking can be significantly more satisfying than spreading ourselves around. Here, “quality over quantity” applies. We might want to use this cycle to work on focusing on and developing one special project or relationship in order to help add purposefulness and depth to our lives.

Saturday

Traditionally Saturdays are great days for protection, banishing a negative situation, and generally a good time to clean up any magical messes that you have been ignoring. Some suggestions for Saturday enchantments would include:

  • Wearing the colors of the day, black and deep purple. Here’s your perfect excuse to be dramatic and witchy. Empower these dramatic pieces of your wardrobe for protection and strength.
  • Burning black candles to absorb negativity and burning purple ones to increase your magical wisdom and boost your spirituality
  • Adding a touch of garden witchery to your Saturday spells by working with the pansy (in black or purple of course), the morning glory flowering vine, or the cypress tree.
  • Carrying an obsidian, hematite, or jet tumbled stone in your pocket to reinforce your personal protection and to ward off bad vibes and sour feelings. You can also add these crystals to a candle spell on a Saturday night to really increase the punch of your spellcasting.
  • Cleaning your house and cleansing it while you are at it. Tap into those obstacle-removing vibes and the positive, concluding energies.
  • Closing up the final day of the bewitching week with a bang by calling on Hecate for protection and guidance.

Eclipse Season Begins: Solar Eclipse in Virgo

While we hate to think of summer vacation EVER coming to an end, this eclipse puts us in a “back to work” headspace. But hey, the urge to be more productive has been in the air ever since August 11, 2015 when buoyant Jupiter moved into Virgo for thirteen months. Those Jupiter-fueled plans—which may have involved starting a business, traveling or studying—get an energizing burst from this eclipse. It’s time for action…and FAST because Jupiter floats on to Libra next week, on September 9. Circle March 12, 2017 for a manifestation date when the corresponding full moon in Virgo lets us harvest the seeds we plant near Thursday. And what a bumper crop this will be, since we are sowing with an eclipse! Virgo is the ruler of health, organization, daily work and acts of service. Under this eclipse we could get serious about self-care. Preventative medicine is the best kind of all, like eating fresh greens, exercising regularly and deploying stress-busting treatments like massage and acupuncture (not just a luxury reserved for spa days after all). Ready to add some new cache to your resume? Look for growth opportunities within your company or sign up for specialized training that can bump you to a new paygrade. Want to make a difference in the world, or at least your corner of it? Virgo is the sign of selfless service. Seek volunteer opportunities where you can earn your earth angel halo. But whatever you do, make sure you have a solid plan in place for how to accomplish it. The eclipse will form a tense square to structure-obsessed Saturn, helping us project-manage our pipe dreams into tangible realities.

Partial Solar Eclipse in Virgo

A partial Solar Eclipse occurs on September 1st at 5:04 AM EDT at 9 degrees and 21 minutes of Virgo. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the sign of Virgo, work and health matters will be a major focus now on a personal level. This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding work, attention to details, fitness, health regimes, and daily routines.

This is a time when we should build our powers of healthy, constructive discrimination; learn to be more pro-active; start a new health and fitness routine; set up specific routines that will help us manage our lives in positive, mindful ways; and learn the “power of now” and of mindfulness. This is a time when we can learn to master the “little” details of our day-to-day lives in a more organized manner so that we can free our minds of clutter. For some of us, circumstances are such that we need to pay more attention to our work and health routines.

Flaws in an important system in our lives are revealed around the time of the eclipse, prompting us to redo or to start fresh. We may find ourselves completely re-working this area of life. Something ends in order for something else to start anew. We may be called to give up something in order to move forward into a new chapter in our lives. Although the “new” may be unrecognizable, it is important to allow the necessary surrender to the unknown. Virgo rules awareness of the body, making full use of resources, attention to details, organization, self-preservation skills, order, and critical analysis. Virgo sees flaws in systems, whether those systems are our daily routines, the methods we work with on the job, or our bodies. Striving for perfection can be a wonderful challenge, as long as we don’t allow ourselves to become overly focused on flaws and feel guilty or perturbed over them. This is where Pisces, Virgo’s opposing sign, comes in to help. Compassion, and finding beauty in imperfection, is our path to balancing this energy.

For some, a new “calling” will surface in the coming months. A new line of work that better matches our inner nature, desire to serve, or emotional make-up may unfold in the months following this eclipse.

This is a tougher eclipse – the Sun and Moon oppose Neptune and square Mars and Saturn. We may be wrestling with expectations and dealing with reality checks now, which can clear the path for new beginnings. Some feelings of disillusionment can come now as our dreams and ideals might be put to the test. Ideally, we move towards a realignment of material goals and spiritual ideals as we assess what is truly meaningful to us.

Major developments in the personal areas of our charts ruled by Virgo are likely to occur over the course of the next few months. However, not everyone will feel the effect of the eclipse with the same intensity. Those whose personal planets are activated by the degree of the eclipse will feel its effects more directly on a personal level.

With this potent Virgo energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives that will benefit us well beyond this Moon cycle. For some of us, circumstances are such that weneed to pay more attention to these matters.

An eclipse occurs close to the nodal axis, and this eclipse is near the North Node in Virgo. Eclipses close to the North Node tend to “feel” easier than those closer to the South Node, as there is a sense of moving forward instead of concentration on having to let go of something.

This is the second to last eclipse in a series falling along the Virgo-Pisces axis that first began with the Solar Eclipse in Pisces in March 2015, and it is the final Solar Eclipse in Virgo in this series. There will be a Solar Eclipse in Pisces in February 2017.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 9 degrees and 21 minutes of Virgo, affecting people born with personal planets and points at 4 to 14 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) most significantly.

The chart above is an Aries chart and shows the other planets’ positions at the time of the eclipse.

This lunation receives some challenging aspects as it ties into an ongoing Saturn-Neptune square, and Mars is involved as well (it is near Saturn and widely squares the Sun and Moon). New beginnings can come from frustrating realizations, disillusionment, and reality checks. We may be wrestling with our expectations now.

The last time a solar eclipse occurred at approximately the same degree as this September 2016 eclipse was September 1, 1997, (with a total Solar Eclipse exactly opposite it in February 1998) and before that, August 31, 1989, and August 31, 1970. It might help to think back to these series of eclipses if you were around then to consider the themes that surrounded your life in order to get a better understanding of what the current eclipse series might mean for you.

The last time we had a set of Virgo-Pisces eclipses was September 2006 to February 2008. Before this set, the dates were March 1997 to September 1998; September 1987 to August 1989 and September 1978 to August 1980. These are also periods of your past, if applicable, that may have had similar themes to this current eclipse set.

Virgo-Pisces eclipse sets (current and some in recent history):

  • March 2015 to February 2017

  • September 2006 to February 2008

  • March 1997 to September 1998

  • September 1987 to August 1989

  • September 1978 to August 1980

If this eclipse stimulates your 1st-7th house axis, you are called upon to strike a balance between relationship and self. Issues of personal courage, confidence, and independence come to the fore over the next year. You may, for example, receive a cosmic push towards expressing yourself more creatively (especially if 9 Virgo is in the first house), and experience an increased drive to take charge of your life. Issues surrounding personal appearance, the body, and one’s image become especially important and, in some cases, critical. Basically, you will be learning to stand on your own two feet! This sequence of eclipses will alert you to the need to interact with others–either the public, or through a close partnership (especially if 9 Virgo is in the seventh house). For some, marriage or divorce will be an issue. For most, carving out a personal identity that includes a significant other who furthers their own personal growth will come into focus. This eclipse should give you a push towards a stronger identity or sense of purposefulness through close partnership.

If this eclipse stimulates your 2nd-8th house axis, you will be called upon to strike a balance between your own needs for security and comfort and the same needs of other people, likely those of a significant other. If 9 Virgo is in the second house, personal finances will come into strong focus. How well have you taken care of your finances? More importantly, have you taken charge of your personal sense of security? If 9 Virgo is in the eighth house, issues of sexuality and spirituality may be a stronger focus. In either case, issues of shared resources, sexuality, and possessions are featured. With this eclipse, it’s time to start fresh with regards to how you go about satisfying your needs for security and comfort. If 9 Virgo is in the second house, take charge of your life by taking the necessary steps to make yourself feel good and secure. You are called upon to make a stand and to tend to your comfort levels. If you do so, the positive effects will ricochet back into your intimate life. If you continue to tend to your partner’s comfort levels while ignoring your own, feelings of resentment and neglect can infect your relationships. Get in touch with what feels most comfortable for you, and the intimacy level in your relationship will step up a notch. If 9 Virgo is in the eighth house, you are learning about the comfort levels of others. Essentially, you are learning to share and to surrender yourself (in a balanced manner!) to intimacy.

If the 3rd-9th house axis is stimulated by this eclipse, issues surrounding learning and sharing knowledge will come to the fore. For some, issues surrounding attention to one’s immediate environment, and branching out and beyond it, are stimulated. If 9 Virgo is in the third house, you are receiving a cosmic push to become more active in your immediate environment (neighborhood, with siblings/relatives, etc.), and/or to learn and communicate facts that fuel your opinions. If 9 Virgo is in the ninth house, you will be learning to expand your horizons, either through contact with people from an entirely different background than yours, travel, or higher learning. Your personal philosophy will be changing, and this eclipse gives you a push towards adopting beliefs that truly work for you in the real world. Other possible issues stimulated include transportation and mobility (for example, some may be learning to depend on others for getting from point A to point B, and others may be learning to take charge of their own mobility), running errands and tending to one’s daily life effectively, and learning about one’s need for self-expression through adventure.

If the 4th-10th house axis is stimulated by this eclipse, issues surrounding public and private lives, as well as attention to career and to family, are stimulated. The fourth house rules our instinctual needs, the domestic scene, our needs for security, and our focus on family and home life as well as relationships with family. The tenth house rules our needs for status, our career and reputation, our worldly ambitions, structure, and our drive for success. Striking a balance between these issues is the focus of this sequence of eclipses. If 9 Virgo is in the fourth house, it’s time to take steps to improve your family and home life. This eclipse is the first cosmic push for you to take charge of your private life. If 9 Virgo is in the tenth house, you are called upon to pay more attention to your career and public life, and to take charge of this important part of your life. Either way, this can play out in a number of ways. Some may have to make some critical decisions due to situations in the life that force them to make choices between career and family goals. Some people are promoted or their career takes a new direction (especially if an eclipse occurs close to the Midheaven). The challenge is to find a healthy balance–to improve home life, while at the same time tending to one’s career needs.

If this eclipse stimulates your 5th-11th house axis, social activity is the focus. The need to be appreciated by others, and the need for togetherness with others, comes into play. A love affair may begin or end under this influence. New contacts with others may also occur. If 9 Virgo is in the fifth, you will learn to let go of a fear of taking risks, and to develop the courage to strike out on your own individual and creative path without fear. You are called upon to deal with others in a more personal, involved, and loving manner, rather than falling back on reason and intellect, which detaches you from your feelings. This series of eclipses is about learning to take personal risks, which requires a certain amount of self-confidence. If 9 Virgo is in the eleventh, you will be learning about letting go of your attachment to the drama of romance and personal relationships, as well as your willfulness. You are called upon to learn about the value of the team. You may need to give freedom to your romantic partner instead of expecting him or her to follow a script of your own making. You learn the value of brotherly love and the benefits of a sense of belonging to a community. Events are such that you move towards a more objective approach to your life and you cultivate true friendships.

If this eclipse stimulates your 6th-12th house axis, issues of work and service, as well as health (both mental/spiritual, and physical), come into focus. If 9 Virgo is in the sixth house, you are called upon to deal with the the details and practicalities of everyday life, to become more organized, and to take charge of your routines. It’s time to formulate some clear goals and plans. Circumstances are such that you need to develop some healthy habits, routines, and schedules. Believing in a grand plan is fine, but practical concerns need to be dealt with as well. Recognizing your personal limitations in terms of just how much you can give to others and just how much compassion and understanding you can show is essential now. It’s time to structure your life. If 9 Virgo is in the twelfth house, over the next year you are called upon to rid yourself of guilt about under-performing, and to develop faith and trust in a larger more spiritual plan. It’s time to let go of some of your fears that you are not doing enough, to develop more compassion and understanding of others, and to be humble, feeling safe in the knowledge that you (and others) are not perfect. It’s time to let go of some of your obsessions with rules, details, and fears of not doing things perfectly. When this axis is stimulated, issues of guilt, worry, and anxiety become paramount.

Mercury Retrograde in Virgo: Choose Your Battles

On Tuesday, messenger Mercury makes his third of four retrogrades in 2016. For the next three weeks, the communication planet will backslide through anxious Virgo, making everyone extra neurotic. Virgo energy loves things done “just so”; this is the purist of the zodiac. But fussiness could border on insanity while Mercury’s in reverse. DO choose your battles! Mercury rules the transfer and travel of information, so during this signal-jamming cycle, it’s wise to password protect all sensitive data and back it up to the cloud. Keep a careful watch on mobile devices, too. Leaving your cell in a cab or dumping coffee on your laptop? Mistakes that can be avoided with a little extra caution. With trivia obsessed Virgo at the helm, however, we can harness the “re” powers of this cosmic cycle and dive into research missions. By the time the speedy planet corrects course on September 22, we’ll be armed with all the facts and figures we need to make clear-headed choices for ourselves.

Mercury Retrograde in Virgo

Mercury is retrograde from August 30-September 22, 2016. Mercury’s shadow period begins August 10th and ends October 6th, 2016. Note that the shadow period begins before Mercury turns retrograde, when Mercury first passes over the degree that Mercury later returns to in retrograde motion.

The shadow period ends when Mercury again passes over the degree at which it first turned retrograde. The shadow period is different than Mercury’s storm period in astrology, which refers to the period when Mercury is moving especially slowly.

As the planet of communication, Mercury retrograde tends to breed a certain level of confusion. Mercury rules our “lower” mind–how we perceive and interpret information that we receive from our environment, and how we relay that information to others. Mercury has rulership over such things as speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail and shipping, and so forth. All of these areas of life are affected when Mercury is functioning in a sluggish state. Decision-making is challenged during Mercury retrograde. Needless to say, it is not advised to sign contracts, engage in important decision-making, or launch a new business. Delays and challenges are more probable with Mercury retrograde. It’s a time when being careless with money, our personal information, or paperwork can be costly.

There is absolutely a positive side to Mercury Retrograde. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting. We look at the world a little differently–through different filters–and can come up with some very important inner revelations. It may be difficult to communicate them under this influence, but not everything needs to be rationalized. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, benefiting from keeping a journal, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication can actually re-connect us to other means of communication, such as when there is an unexpected power outage and we’re forced off the computer and television, finding different and often satisfying ways to entertain ourselves.

It is important to note that there is absolutely no reason to suspend projects or anything of the sort during the Mercury Retrograde cycle. It’s not an ideal time to start new ones or to sign contracts, simply because a change of mind is very possible once Mercury turns direct. However, it’s a fabulous time to do some “outside of the box” thinking. Acting on our ideas, however, might be best left for a Mercury Direct period.

Pay close attention to what you say and communicate in general, particularly around the days of Mercury’s stations (August 30th and September 22nd), as well as around retrograde Mercury’s conjunction to the Sun on September 12th (midway between the start and end of the retro period). If you are itching to make a point with someone, especially, or if you are planning on “signing on the dotted line”, try to hold off. It is likely that you will have a change of mind once the station passes, and you can do some damage in the meantime. When a planet stations, its energies are very strong in our lives. When Mercury stations, communications have more impact, so that negative ones could have long-term implications at this time. However, if you are very clear within yourself and about what you are communicating, this can be a positive thing. Read more about Mercury retrograde.
